JJ Wells Named Director of Analytics and Discovery for Firm’s Homestead Exemption Analysis Division

March 18, 2024

Linebarger announces the appointment of Justin “JJ” Wells as its new Director of Analytics and Discovery for the Homestead Exemption Analysis (HEA) division. In his new role, Wells will be responsible for managing the firm’s extensive program that discovers erroneous homestead exemptions and identifies tax underpayments for our public-sector clients.

In the past decade, Linebarger’s HEA program has identified and returned nearly $5 billion of property value to the taxation roles due to mistaken homestead exemptions. With clients across the state, Linebarger is committed to helping our clients maintain the most accurate tax rolls in order to fairly collect revenue for their communities.

Wells has extensive experience with local governments and litigation, beginning his career as a title examiner in Midland before relocating to central Texas. He worked in private practice based in San Marcos and then Luling before joining the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office. His time at the DA’s office was initially as a prosecutor and later as the sole attorney dedicated to non-criminal County matters and the primary legal resource for the Caldwell County Commissioners Court.

Wells joined Linebarger in 2021, quickly establishing himself as an indispensable attorney for our clients in Hays and Caldwell Counties.

“JJ is an invaluable asset to our firm and his promotion to this position will strengthen our HEA program,” says Paul Chapa, Managing Partner of Linebarger’s Austin office. “His willingness to step into this sizeable role is testament to his work ethic and dedication to assisting our clients.”

Wells earned his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctorate from Texas Tech School of Law. He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 2012.
